Tomato Red is a short musical whirlwind trip through the history of the tomato’s arrival and presence in the United States. This song finds us in the 1930s, when large quantities of unripe tomatoes were sprayed with ethylene gas to appear artificially ripe. (If you’ve ever wondered why many mass-harvested tomatoes are tasteless, it’s because this practice continues today!)
