If You Can Prove That I Should Set You Free

And for my next trick, I am diving into writing a mini-oratorio for Albany Symphony’s Dogs of Desire! If You Can Prove That I Should Set You Free is a setting of suffragist Alice Duer Miller’s hilariously incisive poems from the collections Are Women People? and its followup, Women Are People!, framed by this powerful speech by activist Frances Ellen Watkins Harper. It’s going to be an intense 15 minutes!

The piece premieres as part of Albany Symphony’s Sing Out, NY! American Music Festival on May 31st. I’m so excited to be included in this roundup of composers and performers on my maiden voyage with this group, and I hope to see you there!
