Utah Opera Premiere: No Ladies in the Lady's Book
…And here’s that other short opera premiere to which I’d alluded! I’m writing a libretto with composer Lisa DeSpain commissioned by Utah Opera. The opera is one of four short pieces commemorating the 150th anniversary of the transcontinental railroad’s Golden Spike, about which I initially knew practically nothing. Extensive research revealed that many, many women whose inventions and labor contributed to the success of the railroad were not properly recognized for their efforts. Indeed, Godey’s Lady’s Book, the most popular publication of the day, reported that “this great work was begun, carried on, and completed by men only." Not the case at all! Well, Lisa and I are here to change that perception! We are cramming as much information as we can into this little piece and can’t wait to share it with the world. No Ladies in the Lady’s Book premieres in 2019 and will tour to various locations around Utah in the spring.
You can read all about the four commissioned operas and their writers here. Check back there periodically as performance dates and venues are added. I hope you will be able to catch it during the run!
