New World: An Afternoon of Opera & Musical Theatre

  • Roselle Center for the Arts, Puglisi Orchestra Hall 110 Orchard Road Newark, DE, 19716 United States (map)

University of Delaware Lyric Theatre's fall MainStage production features three notable works that bend genres, including two 21st century micro-operas by composer Lisa DeSpain and librettist Rachel Peters and "Songs for a New World," the first, and most produced show, by musical theatre icon Jason Robert Brown (Parade, The Last Five Years). "No Ladies in the Lady's Book" was commissioned by Utah Opera to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of Promontory Point's Golden Spike and "Men I'm Not Married To" is based on a hilarious Dorothy Parker story filled with 1920s-era jazz and set in a most intimate location: a bathroom. The stirring stories of "Songs for A New World" span centuries, weaving history and characters together in a meditation on human resilience and self-discovery.
